Gender balance in Science and Technology - lunchtime seminar (Tuesday 22 May)

In several countries within and outside Europe studies have shown that women are still underrepresented, e.g. only 29 % of the researchers in EU are women, and only 18 % of researchers in the private sector are women (She Figures, 2006). Even though a lot has already been achieved and numbers in female students and PhDs are slowly increasing in general, much action still has to be done to ensure gender balance in permanent academic and leadership positions. Karen Lloyd reported from a study in Canada “Beyond Bias and Barriers: Fulfilling the Potential of Women in Academic Science & Engineering” several options which can be done easily. We all know that political changes are needed, however, we can start acting in our surroundings as well, such as setting professional and equity standards, quota, specific awards for women in tenure-track positions, blinded reviews in the peer review process, etc.

One important action has been started at the European level last year, the creation of the European Platform for Women Scientists (EPWS). We will welcome Dr A. Ehmke with a talk entitled: “European Science Policy and the Role of the European Platform of Women Scientists”. Dr. Ehmke, current president of the EPWS and former Vice Rector of the University of Luxemburg holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Bonn (Germany). In her professional career she worked for more than twenty years as scientist in the field of Pharmaceutical Biology at the Universities of Bonn and Braunschweig. As Vice President of the TU Braunschweig (1994-1996) she chaired the "Kommission für Frauenfragen". From 1998 to 2004 she was President of the Trier University of Applied Sciences. During this time she implemented the "Ada Lovelace Projekt", a project encouraging girls and young women in studying Engineering and Sciences and transferred the project to Luxembourg.

We invite all participants to join this interesting lunchtime symposium and discuss with Prof. Ehmke on Tuesday 22 May, starting 13:00.
